Mise-En-Scene

Mise-en-secne is a french term meaning 'In the frame'.

Some of the elements for this are as follows

  • lighting and colour
  • perfomance e.g facial expressions and body language
  • positioning of the characters and objects in the frame.
Colour is also another elements, the first use of colour was scene in films such as the impossble journey in 1904, back then the films were hand painted frame by frame.

Denotation and connotation is also part of the elements for mise-en-scene. Denotation is the literal description of an idea, concept or object, and connotation is what we associate with particualr idea, concept or object.

Positioning of the characters and objects are positioned in the frame.Objects and characters can be in the foreground, middle ground or background. This can emphasise the relative importance of the object or character. If sombody is at the front of the screen it automatically makes them more important. When both foreground and background are in focus it is knowen as 'deep focus'.
